There are no two ways about it, we all get bigger as we age. From the age of around 25, our skin loses collagen and elastin, which leads to a decrease in skin elasticity and firmness, resulting in the appearance of loose or sagging skin, including in the arms. This means of course that if when we put on fat, the law of gravity drags the fat down, hanging and flapping under our arms, and around our armpits. Not only does this look unsightly, but it also feels terrible too.
This is called Adipose Tissue Distribution, when the distribution of fat in our bodies is influenced by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors. In women, it is common for fat to accumulate in the arms, particularly in the triceps area, as they age and experience a decrease in collagen levels. This can result in the appearance of flabbiness or excess fat in the upper arms.
A common concern is Crepey Skin, and is a term used to describe a condition where the skin appears loose and saggy, particularly in older adults. While loss of collagen can be a contributing factor to this condition, it can also be caused by other factors such as weight loss, genetics, and sun damage, decrease in muscle mass, a slower metabolism, hormonal changes, and a decrease in physical activity.
The obvious long term solution initially is to start losing weight, getting rid of excess fat, and building muscle through exercise.
